What to know about the outbreak of a rare kind of Ebola

Health officials are closely monitoring an outbreak of a rare form of Ebola known as the Bundibugyo virus. Unlike the more common Zaire strain that has driven past epidemics in Central and West Africa, this particular variant has no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, making containment efforts more challenging.

The Bundibugyo species was first identified in Uganda in 2007 and has since caused only a handful of small outbreaks. It is less deadly than the Zaire strain, with a historical fatality rate of around 25 to 40 percent compared to the 50 to 90 percent seen in other outbreaks. However, the lack of a targeted medical countermeasure means doctors must rely on supportive care, including fluid replacement, oxygen therapy, and managing secondary infections.

Transmission occurs through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or contaminated surfaces. Early symptoms include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, and fatigue, which can quickly progress to vomiting, diarrhea, and in some cases, internal bleeding. Because these symptoms mimic malaria and typhoid, diagnosis requires laboratory testing.

Public health teams are now tracing contacts and isolating suspected cases to break the chain of transmission. Community engagement is critical, as burial practices and traditional caregiving can spread the virus. While the risk of global spread remains low, travelers in affected regions are advised to avoid contact with sick individuals and practice strict hand hygiene. Researchers are also evaluating whether existing experimental vaccines for other Ebola strains offer any cross-protection, but no definitive answer is available yet.
