Mobile gold miners in eastern Congo complicate health workers’ efforts to contain Ebola

Health workers tracking the Ebola virus say the mobile nature of these miners makes their job nearly impossible. Unlike villagers who stay in one place, miners like Isaac move from one dig site to another, often crossing provincial borders within weeks. They sleep in crowded camps with no clean water or sanitation, and when someone shows symptoms, they rarely stay put long enough for medical teams to trace their contacts.

The current outbreak, which began in August, has already killed more than 200 people in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. Response teams have vaccinated thousands, but they keep losing track of people who vanish into the bush. "We vaccinate a village, and two days later half the men are gone to a new site," said one local health official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

For the miners, the choice is stark. A day of digging can earn them a few dollars, which is more than farming offers in a region torn by decades of conflict. Isaac, who has no parents, said he knows about Ebola but cannot afford to stop working. "If I get sick, I get sick," he shrugged, holding a small plastic bag of ore. "But if I don't dig, I don't eat."

Health teams are now trying a new approach: bringing the vaccine to the mines. They set up temporary clinics at known dig sites, but the miners often move before the shots arrive. Some have even refused vaccination, fearing that health workers are actually government agents trying to relocate them. The result is a deadly game of hide-and-seek, where the virus moves faster than the people trying to stop it.
