COLUMBUS, Ohio – As Thanksgiving approaches, many families are busy preparing their meals and organizing their fridges for the delicious leftovers to come. Columbus Public Health is reminding everyone of essential food safety practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.
One of the key tips is to ensure proper thawing of the turkey. It’s recommended to thaw it in the refrigerator, allowing approximately 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey. This method keeps the bird at a safe temperature throughout the thawing process. Additionally, cooking the turkey to an internal temperature of 165°F is crucial to eliminate harmful bacteria.
When it comes to leftovers, it’s important to refrigerate them within two hours after serving to prevent foodborne illnesses. Store leftovers in shallow containers to cool them quickly and make sure to consume them within three to four days.
By following these guidelines, families can enjoy a delicious and safe Thanksgiving feast while minimizing health risks associated with food preparation.
