Study Finds Voters May Live Longer Than Non-Voters

Casting a ballot may be another healthy habit, like going for a run or eating lots of vegetables. Research examining older Americans has found that those who vote tend to live longer than those who do not, suggesting a link between civic participation and longevity.

The findings do not prove that voting itself adds years to a life. Instead, they point to a pattern: people who stay engaged with the world around them, maintain routines, and feel a sense of purpose may also be the ones who show up at the polls. Health, mobility, and social connection all influence whether someone can participate in elections, so the relationship likely runs in both directions.

Still, the connection is notable because it fits a broader body of evidence on active aging. Staying involved in community life, whether through volunteering, social groups, or civic duties, has long been associated with better health outcomes in later years. Voting is one more form of that engagement, and it comes with a sense of belonging and influence over the future.

Researchers caution that the results should not be read as a reason to pressure anyone to vote for health reasons. Rather, the study adds to the understanding of how social and civic life intertwine with physical well-being as people age.
