The number of Americans without health insurance is climbing again, and even people who have coverage are finding it harder to afford care. Recent data shows a steady erosion in coverage rates after several years of progress, with rising premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses pushing more households to the financial edge.
A growing share of insured adults are considered underinsured, meaning their plans leave them exposed to costs they cannot reasonably pay. For many families, a single emergency room visit or a short hospital stay can mean months of debt. Preventive care often gets skipped because patients worry about the bill that follows.
Family caregivers are feeling the strain most acutely. Millions of people juggle jobs while looking after aging parents or sick relatives, and the costs add up quickly. Home care, medical equipment, transportation to appointments, and unpaid time off work all take a toll. Many caregivers report dipping into savings or cutting back on their own medical needs to cover someone else's.
Policy analysts point to several forces behind the trend, including the end of pandemic-era protections and employers shifting more costs onto workers. Without intervention, they warn, the number of uninsured and underinsured Americans is likely to keep growing.
