Open enrollment for federal healthcare programs has started, and for Medicare recipients there are two big differences coming in 2027 that beneficiaries should keep in mind as they review their coverage options this season.
The annual enrollment window gives people on Medicare a chance to adjust their plans, compare costs and check whether their doctors and prescriptions remain covered. This year the process carries extra weight because several changes set to take effect in 2027 could reshape what enrollees pay and which plans are available to them.
The first difference involves premiums and cost sharing. Analysts expect plan pricing to shift as insurers adjust to new payment rules and rising healthcare costs. The second involves plan offerings themselves, with some insurers revising networks or exiting certain markets, which could leave enrollees with fewer choices in some areas.
Experts advise beneficiaries not to assume their current plan will stay the same. Reviewing the annual notice of change, checking drug formularies and confirming provider participation can prevent surprises later. Enrollment support is available through state programs and trained counselors, and people are encouraged to act before the deadline rather than waiting until the last minute.
With 2027 changes already casting a shadow, this open enrollment period may be one of the most important in recent years for Medicare households.
