As school breaks begin and routines shift, many young teens find themselves taking on new responsibilities, from staying home alone to babysitting for the first time. To equip these adolescents with essential knowledge and confidence, a series of Safe Sitter® classes will be offered throughout the summer.
The nationally recognized program is designed specifically for students in middle school, typically those ages 11 to 14. The comprehensive curriculum moves beyond basic childcare, focusing on critical safety and life-support skills. Participants will receive hands-on training in infant and child choking rescue, learn how to manage common behavioral challenges, and understand the fundamentals of first aid.
A key component of the course is teaching young sitters how to screen jobs for safety and handle emergencies calmly. Instructors also cover essential business tips, such as setting a competitive rate and effectively communicating with parents. The goal is to foster mature, capable, and responsible young caregivers who can ensure not only the safety of the children in their care but also their own.
The multi-lesson courses will be held on select dates, providing a structured and supportive environment for learning. Space is expected to be limited for these sessions, which aim to build a foundation of safety and preparedness that benefits the entire community.
