Alfalfa sprout linked to food-poisoning outbreak in 15 states, health officials say

Alfalfa sprout linked to food-poisoning outbreak in 15 states, health officials say

Federal health authorities have linked a recent food-poisoning outbreak to contaminated alfalfa sprouts, with cases now confirmed across 15 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the outbreak involves multiple strains of bacteria, making it more complex than a typical single-pathogen event. At least 60 people have fallen ill, though officials expect that number to rise as more reports come in.

The investigation points to raw alfalfa sprouts as the common ingredient among those who got sick. Health officials say the sprouts were likely distributed through grocery stores and restaurants, but they have not yet named a specific supplier. Symptoms reported include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with several people requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported so far.

Because sprouts are grown in warm, humid conditions, they are especially prone to bacterial contamination. The CDC advises anyone at higher risk, including older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with weakened immune systems, to avoid eating raw sprouts entirely. For others, the agency recommends cooking sprouts thoroughly before eating, as heat kills the bacteria.

State and federal investigators are working to trace the sprouts back to their source. Until that is done, officials urge consumers to check their refrigerators and throw away any alfalfa sprouts they have on hand, even if they look fresh. The outbreak serves as a reminder that even healthy-looking produce can carry hidden risks.
