Rate hikes announced for Connecticut health insurance

The Connecticut Insurance Department has finalized its decisions on rate increases that insurance companies will be permitted to implement. Regulators signed off on hikes that will affect thousands of residents who buy coverage on the individual market or through small group plans.

Officials said the approved increases are lower than what carriers had originally requested. Several insurers had sought double digit percentage jumps, citing rising medical costs, higher prescription drug prices, and increased use of health care services. The department reviewed those filings and trimmed many of them after negotiations and actuarial analysis.

Consumer advocates criticized the outcome, arguing that families already stretched by inflation will struggle to absorb another round of premium growth. They pointed out that even a modest increase compounds over time and can push healthier customers to drop coverage, which raises costs for everyone who remains.

Insurance carriers defended their requests, saying the money is needed to keep pace with hospital charges, specialty drugs, and labor costs across the health system. Without adequate rates, they warned, some plans could become unsustainable.

The new rates take effect January 1 for most policies. Open enrollment begins November 1, giving residents a window to compare plans and switch coverage. State officials urged consumers to review their options carefully rather than letting a policy renew automatically.
