A high school on Staten Island is betting nearly $500,000 on an unusual idea: bringing therapists into the building as holograms. The school is opening a wellness studio built around 3D technology that connects students with remote counselors in real time, offering a futuristic twist on a familiar problem.
The setup works by projecting a live therapist into the room as a three-dimensional figure. Students sit down for a session and speak with a counselor who may be miles away, but who appears present in the space. School leaders say the goal is to close the gap between students who need help and professionals who are hard to hire and retain.
The need is hard to ignore. Schools across the country report rising anxiety, depression, and behavioral struggles among students, while qualified mental health staff remain in short supply. Districts often wait months to fill counseling positions, and rural or underfunded schools can go without full-time support entirely.
Whether holograms can truly help is an open question. Critics point out that technology cannot replace human connection, and some students may find the experience strange or unsettling. Supporters argue the novelty may actually draw students in, lowering the stigma that keeps many teenagers from asking for help.
The wellness studio is set to open later this year, and its results will be watched closely. If students respond well, the model could offer schools a new way to stretch limited resources. If they do not, it will serve as a costly reminder that mental health care is difficult to automate. Either way, the experiment raises a question schools will face more often: how much of student well-being can technology reasonably deliver?
