Authorities in Pasadena are warning residents about a wave of scam calls from people pretending to be public health workers in order to steal personal information.
In one version of the scheme, the caller tells the victim that a prescription has been filled in their name and then asks them to confirm sensitive details as part of a fake verification process. The information sought can include names, dates of birth, insurance numbers, and other data that could be used for identity theft or fraudulent billing.
Officials stress that legitimate health departments do not demand personal or medical details over unsolicited phone calls, and they do not threaten callers or pressure them to act immediately. Residents who receive such calls should hang up, avoid sharing any information, and contact the relevant agency using a phone number they look up themselves rather than one provided by the caller.
People are also urged to watch for red flags such as caller ID that appears to come from a government office, requests for payment or gift cards, and callers who become aggressive when questioned. Anyone who believes they have been targeted should report the incident to local authorities and monitor their accounts and credit reports for unusual activity. Community groups and senior centers are being asked to share the warning with neighbors who may be more vulnerable to these approaches.
