New Orleans East Hospital breaks ground on $10 million inpatient behavioral health unit

New Orleans East Hospital breaks ground on $10 million inpatient behavioral health unit

New Orleans East Hospital has officially broken ground on a new $10 million inpatient behavioral health unit, marking a significant step toward restoring mental health services that were lost nearly two decades ago. Before Hurricane Katrina devastated the region in 2005, the area was served by a 40-bed inpatient behavioral health unit at The Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital, located on the same campus where LCMC Health now operates. The new facility aims to fill that long-standing gap by providing dedicated care for patients experiencing mental health crises.

The project comes as demand for psychiatric services continues to rise across the region, with local healthcare leaders emphasizing the need for accessible, inpatient treatment options. The unit is expected to include modern safety features and therapeutic spaces designed to support recovery. Construction is slated to be completed within the next year, after which the hospital will begin accepting patients. Officials say the unit will create dozens of new jobs and strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in a part of the city that has struggled to regain full medical services since the storm. The investment reflects a broader push to address mental health needs in underserved communities.
