WATERTOWN - After months of Chapter 11 bankruptcy hearings, closures and the ending of services at several of its facilities, North Star Health Alliance on Thursday announced that it would enter a partnership with Regional Rehabilitation Hospitals. However, sources close to the deal say the announcement came before final terms were agreed upon, leaving some board members and staff caught off guard.
The alliance, which has been struggling to restructure its debt and keep its remaining hospitals open, framed the partnership as a necessary step to stabilize operations. In a brief statement, officials said the collaboration would allow RRH to manage certain inpatient rehabilitation services, potentially saving jobs and preserving access to care in the region.
But internal emails obtained by this news organization show that RRH had not yet signed a binding agreement. Several North Star board members expressed frustration that the announcement was made without their full approval, raising questions about the timing and transparency of the decision.
The premature disclosure has also worried creditors, who are watching the bankruptcy proceedings closely. Some analysts say the move could complicate negotiations if RRH decides to walk away or demand better terms. North Star has not responded to requests for comment on the discrepancy between the announcement and the actual status of the deal.
For now, patients and staff are left waiting to see whether the partnership will materialize or become another setback in the health system's long and painful restructuring.
