Texas Governor Greg Abbott is showing no signs of backing down in an unusual dispute with the Biden administration over Medicaid funding. His office fired back this week after federal health officials threatened to cut off nearly ten billion dollars in annual payments to Texas hospitals.
The fight centers on whether the state has been improperly billing the federal government for services provided to low-income patients through a special waiver program. Federal regulators argue Texas has been using the money to cover costs that do not meet the program's requirements. Abbott's spokesman, however, reiterated that the state is not doing anything wrong that would disqualify hospitals from receiving the funds.
The governor's team insists the current system is legal and necessary, pointing out that the money helps keep rural and safety-net hospitals open. They say the federal government is now trying to change the rules after years of approving the same arrangement. Abbott has not offered any compromise, and he appears ready to take the fight to court if needed.
This is a rare public clash because Texas usually avoids direct confrontation with federal health agencies over funding. The stakes are high, as losing the money would force many hospitals to cut services or close entirely. For now, Abbott is holding firm, but the standoff could drag on for months while both sides review the legal arguments.
