Sailors and Marines who recently returned from an extended deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln were offered mental health services Saturday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The governor's office said the support is meant to help service members and their families adjust after a long and demanding time at sea. The deployment kept the crew away from home for an extended period, and officials noted that the transition back to shore life can carry serious emotional strain.
Newsom said the state is committed to making sure veterans and active duty personnel can access care without barriers. The effort includes counseling resources and coordination with local agencies that serve military communities.
Advocates have long argued that mental health care for returning service members needs to be immediate and easy to reach, not buried in paperwork. The governor's action puts new attention on that gap and on the responsibility that states share with the federal government for supporting those who serve.
