Bipartisan Push Gains Ground on Youth Mental Health

Bipartisan Push Gains Ground on Youth Mental Health

The mental health crisis affecting young Americans did not start with the COVID-19 pandemic, but the events of the past few years made it far worse. More than 40 percent of teenagers have reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. Suicide attempts, self-injury, and drug overdoses among young people have risen to levels that alarm experts across the political spectrum.

At the same time, the behavioral health system that is supposed to help these young people is understaffed and poorly structured. Families often wait months for appointments. Schools lack counselors. Emergency rooms become the default option when nothing else is available.

The Bipartisan Policy Center has been working to change that. The organization has brought together lawmakers from both parties to focus on practical solutions rather than political fights. Their efforts center on expanding the behavioral health workforce, improving early intervention in schools, and making it easier for families to find care.

The group argues that youth mental health should not be a partisan issue. The numbers affect every community, urban and rural, red and blue. Momentum is building in Congress for legislation that would fund training programs, support school-based services, and strengthen telehealth options for families in underserved areas.

Whether that momentum turns into lasting change depends on whether lawmakers can keep working together. For now, the push continues, driven by a crisis that shows no sign of fading.
