Lisa Wolff has told a public inquiry that medical staff repeatedly ignored her daughter's autism diagnosis before the young woman took her own life. Speaking at the Essex Mental Health Inquiry, Wolff described a system that failed to see her daughter as a whole person, instead treating her symptoms in isolation without understanding her underlying condition.
Her daughter, who had been diagnosed with autism as a child, was admitted to mental health services as a teenager. According to Wolff, clinicians dismissed the autism diagnosis as irrelevant to her daughter's distress. They focused on mood disorders and prescribed treatments that did not account for her sensory and communication needs. Wolff said she raised concerns multiple times, but staff told her they knew best.
The inquiry heard that the young woman became increasingly isolated within the system. She was moved between different units and teams, with no one holding a full picture of her history. Wolff said her daughter felt misunderstood and often refused to speak to staff who she felt did not listen. On the day she died, she had been discharged from a short stay in hospital with no follow-up plan in place.
Wolff told the inquiry that her daughter was not just a set of symptoms but a bright, creative young person who needed patience and a different approach. She said the system is not built for people with autism, and that her daughter was lost because of it. The inquiry continues to hear evidence from families and professionals about how mental health services in Essex have handled cases involving neurodivergent patients.
