Duke Health and CaroMont Health have announced a partnership aimed at building two new hospitals in Mecklenburg County. The move marks the latest development in a growing wave of hospital expansion across the Charlotte region, as major health systems compete to serve one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country.
The two organizations filed a joint application for what are known as certificate of need requests, a state regulatory process that determines whether new medical facilities can be built. North Carolina uses this system to control health care costs and avoid unnecessary duplication of services. If approved, the hospitals would add beds and emergency services to a market that has seen rapid population growth in recent years.
Duke Health, based in Durham, operates a large network of hospitals and clinics across the state and is affiliated with Duke University. CaroMont Health is a Gaston County based system that has served the region for decades. By combining resources, the two systems hope to strengthen their position against other large providers already operating in the Charlotte area.
The proposal reflects a broader trend of consolidation and expansion among health care providers seeking to capture patients in suburban and urban communities. Details about the locations, costs, and timelines for the two hospitals have not been fully disclosed. State regulators are expected to review the application in the coming months, and approval is not guaranteed.
