David C. Miller, MD, MPH, has been selected as the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt Health and Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Miller currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Michigan Medicine and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Michigan.
He will take over the role on January 1, 2027, succeeding Jeff Balser, who has led the organization for the past several years. The appointment comes after a national search conducted by the university's board of trustees.
Miller is a urologic oncologist and health services researcher by training. During his time at Michigan Medicine, he oversaw a large academic health system that includes multiple hospitals, outpatient clinics, and a health insurance plan. He also led the institution's clinical, research, and education missions.
In a statement, university officials praised Miller's experience in managing complex health systems and his focus on improving patient care and medical education. They noted his track record of integrating clinical operations with academic research.
Miller expressed enthusiasm for the new role, saying he looks forward to building on Vanderbilt Health's reputation for innovation and patient-centered care. The transition will take place over the next two years, allowing for a smooth handoff of leadership responsibilities.
