Cortland County reports measles case; health officials track contacts, say public risk low

A resident of Cortland County has tested positive for measles, according to the county health department. The individual is said to be recovering at home, and officials have begun the process of identifying and notifying anyone who may have been exposed to the virus.

The health department said the risk to the general public remains low, but it is taking the necessary steps to prevent further spread. Measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. Symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body.

Officials are currently working to trace the person's movements during the period they were infectious. Anyone who may have been in close contact with the individual is being contacted directly. The health department is also reminding residents to check their vaccination records, as the MMR vaccine is the most effective way to prevent measles. Two doses of the vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing the disease.

While the case is isolated, health officials are urging anyone who develops symptoms to call their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or emergency room, to avoid potentially exposing others in the waiting room.
