The federal government's response to the cyclospora outbreak has been severely hampered by sweeping budget and staffing reductions implemented under President Donald Trump, according to internal reports and interviews with current and former health officials. The cuts, which included the near-total elimination of funding when Trump dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, have left critical disease surveillance and response systems understaffed and underfunded.

Health experts describe the situation as a "perfect storm" that allowed the parasitic infection to spread more widely before detection. Cyclospora, which causes severe gastrointestinal illness, typically requires rapid laboratory testing and coordinated public health alerts to contain. But with USAID's global health programs gutted and domestic agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention facing deep reductions, the early warning network that once caught outbreaks quickly has collapsed.

One former CDC epidemiologist said the cuts forced the agency to rely on outdated data and a skeleton crew of investigators. "We lost the ability to track cases in real time, and by the time we confirmed the outbreak, it had already spread across multiple states," the official said.
