RALEIGH - The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has reported a noticeable increase in cyclosporiasis cases across the state. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People typically get infected by consuming contaminated food or water, often linked to fresh produce like raspberries, basil, or cilantro imported from tropical regions.
Health officials say symptoms usually appear about a week after exposure and can include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. Without treatment, the illness can last for weeks or even months. The infection is not known to spread directly from person to person.
State health leaders are reminding residents and visitors to practice good food safety. Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water can help reduce risk, though it may not remove all parasites. Cooking produce is the most reliable way to kill Cyclospora.
Anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea or other symptoms should contact a healthcare provider. Diagnosis requires a specific stool test, and treatment typically involves a course of antibiotics. The department continues to monitor the situation and urges caution, especially during warmer months when cases tend to peak.
