A study by the University of Oulu and the University of Eastern Finland found that people who developed Alzheimer's disease before the age of 65 accumulated a wide range of health problems, particularly mental health disorders and cardiovascular conditions, long before their diagnosis. The findings suggest that early-onset Alzheimer's disease may follow a different path than the form that appears in older adults.
Researchers examined health data spanning decades, tracking individuals who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's before turning 65. They compared this group with people who developed the disease later in life and with those who remained free of dementia. The early-onset group stood out for its higher burden of psychiatric diagnoses, including depression and anxiety, as well as metabolic and heart-related conditions.
These patterns appeared years, sometimes more than a decade, before memory problems became obvious. In contrast, late-onset Alzheimer's is more strongly linked to established risk factors such as advanced age, the APOE e4 gene, and vascular disease.
The results point to a need for different prevention and screening approaches. Clinicians may need to pay closer attention to younger adults with combinations of mental health and cardiovascular issues, since these could signal elevated risk. The study also raises questions about whether early-onset Alzheimer's should be treated as a distinct subtype with its own biological mechanisms.
Further research is needed to confirm these associations and to understand what drives the differences. Still, the work adds weight to the idea that Alzheimer's is not one uniform condition, and that age of onset matters when assessing who is at risk and why.
