This Men's Mental Health Month, advocates are working to dismantle the stigma that often keeps men from seeking help. Mike Kategaya, founder and CEO of The Mental Health Hub For Men, recently spoke about the unique pressures men face and the steps needed to move toward healing.
Kategaya highlighted that societal expectations often teach men to suppress emotions, equating vulnerability with weakness. This cultural conditioning can lead to isolation, untreated depression, and higher rates of suicide among men. The key, he argues, is not just awareness but action. He encourages men to start small: talk to a trusted friend, write down feelings, or simply acknowledge that it is okay to not be okay.
The conversation also focused on practical ways to move forward. Kategaya emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces where men can speak without judgment. He suggests that friends and family check in directly, using specific questions like "How are you really doing?" rather than vague greetings. Workplaces, too, can play a role by normalizing mental health days and offering resources.
the message is one of hope. By redefining strength as the courage to ask for help, men can break free from the silence and build healthier, more connected lives.
