MDCalc, a widely used online platform for medical reference, is rolling out a new quality-rating system for its library of over 800 clinical calculators. These tools help physicians assess everything from disease risk and stroke severity to transplant eligibility and medication dosing. The ratings aim to give doctors a clearer sense of which calculators are backed by strong evidence and which may rely on weaker data.
The system assigns scores based on factors like the size and quality of the original study, how well the calculator has been validated in different patient groups, and how often it is updated. Each calculator will receive a star rating and a detailed breakdown of its strengths and limitations. The goal is to help clinicians avoid relying on outdated or poorly validated tools that could lead to incorrect treatment decisions.
MDCalc says the move comes in response to growing concerns about the accuracy of some widely used clinical scores. Many calculators were developed decades ago using small or narrow patient samples, yet they remain in daily use. By adding transparency, the platform hopes to support better decision-making at the bedside. The ratings will be reviewed and updated as new research becomes available.
