Virginia health officials are urging residents to get their flu shots as data from other parts of the country points to an early jump in infections this season. So far, only about 10 percent of residents in the state have received a flu vaccine this year, a figure officials say is lower than they would like as the colder months approach.
The push comes as several states report rising numbers of influenza cases earlier than usual, a pattern that has prompted concern among public health experts who track the spread of respiratory illness. While flu activity in Virginia has not yet reached high levels, officials warn that the trends seen elsewhere often signal what is coming.
Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from the flu, according to health experts. They note that the shot is recommended for nearly everyone six months and older, with particular emphasis on older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions.
Officials also encourage residents to take other precautions, including frequent handwashing, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes. They say getting vaccinated now gives the body time to build protection before flu activity typically peaks in the winter months. Residents can check with their doctor, pharmacy, or local health department about where to get a shot.
