Hantavirus risk to Jersey 'very low'

Health authorities in Jersey have moved to reassure the public that the risk of hantavirus infection on the island is currently very low. Officials confirmed they are keeping a close watch on the situation in coordination with colleagues in the United Kingdom, but stressed there is no cause for alarm among residents.

Hantaviruses are a group of viruses carried by rodents, particularly certain species of mice and rats. They can cause serious illness in humans, typically through inhalation of dust contaminated with the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected animals. While the virus is present in wild rodent populations across parts of Europe and Asia, its prevalence in Jersey has historically been minimal.

The statement from local officials comes amid heightened awareness of the virus in other regions. However, experts emphasize that the local environment and rodent control measures in place help keep the threat contained. They advise that the best prevention is simple hygiene: avoid contact with wild rodents and their nests, and do not sweep or vacuum droppings dry, as this can stir up infectious dust. Instead, wetting the area with disinfectant before cleaning is recommended.

For now, the message from the authorities is one of calm vigilance. They continue to monitor data and will update the public if the risk level changes.
