The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has quietly rescinded changes to a key federal vaccine advisory committee, following a court ruling that officials overstepped their legal authority. The move comes after a federal judge determined the department had acted improperly when it sought to alter the membership and procedures of the panel, which advises the government on immunization policies.
The now-withdrawn revisions had sparked controversy among public health experts and lawmakers, who argued the changes could have politicized the panel's recommendations. Critics said the alterations threatened to undermine the scientific integrity of the vaccine approval and guidance process. The judge's decision found that the department lacked the statutory power to unilaterally implement the modifications without proper congressional oversight.
In response to the ruling, HHS officials confirmed the agency would revert to the panel's previous structure and operating rules. The department did not provide additional comment on the reversal or indicate whether it plans to pursue alternative legal avenues. Public health advocates welcomed the withdrawal, calling it a necessary step to preserve the independence of vaccine policy decisions. The panel, which includes medical experts and researchers, plays a critical role in determining which vaccines are recommended for the U.S. population.
