Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in Abuja after a woman arriving from Uganda tested positive, making the country the latest in the region to report an infection as the outbreak continues to spread.
Kenya confirmed its first case earlier this month and has since recorded nine infections, according to health officials. The developments have raised alarm across East and West Africa, where health authorities are working to trace contacts and prevent further transmission.
The woman in Abuja was identified at a screening point after arriving from Uganda, where the outbreak has affected multiple districts. She has been placed in isolation and is receiving treatment, while contact tracing has begun to identify anyone who may have been exposed during her travel.
Health officials say the risk to the wider public remains low but urged vigilance, particularly at airports and land border crossings. Screening measures have been tightened, and travelers showing symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and unexplained bleeding are being referred for testing.
The World Health Organization has called for coordinated regional action, noting that cross-border movement has complicated efforts to contain the virus. Uganda has reported a rising number of cases in recent weeks, and neighboring countries are on high alert.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or with contaminated surfaces and materials. Early symptoms resemble those of other common illnesses, which can delay diagnosis and allow the virus to spread undetected.
Nigerian authorities said isolation units have been prepared in Abuja and other major cities, and health workers have been briefed on infection control procedures. Officials are also working to counter misinformation that could discourage people from seeking care.
The confirmation in Abuja follows weeks of heightened surveillance across the continent. Kenya's nine infections remain under investigation, and health teams there are monitoring contacts of the confirmed cases. Authorities in both countries say they are sharing information with international partners to track the spread of the virus.
Public health experts say the coming weeks will be critical. Rapid testing, clear communication with communities, and strict adherence to infection prevention measures will determine whether the outbreak can be contained or whether it spreads further across borders.
