Zocdoc Buys Sohar Health to Expand Insurance Verification Tools

Zocdoc acquired insurance technology company Sohar Health as it pushes to evolve beyond an appointment-booking marketplace into broader healthcare access infrastructure.

The deal adds automated benefits eligibility checks to Zocdoc's platform. Sohar Health built software that verifies a patient's insurance coverage in real time, confirming whether a specific provider accepts a plan and what a visit will cost before the appointment happens. That kind of upfront clarity addresses one of the most persistent frustrations in the American healthcare system, where patients often discover coverage problems only after they arrive for care.

Zocdoc said the acquisition fits its long-term strategy of removing friction from the patient journey. The company started as a tool for finding and booking doctors, but it has gradually added layers of functionality around insurance matching, cost estimates, and post-visit follow-up. Bringing eligibility verification in-house means Zocdoc can control that step directly instead of relying on outside vendors or leaving patients to call their insurer.

Sohar Health's team will join Zocdoc as part of the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The move reflects a wider trend among healthcare technology companies competing to own more of the patient experience. Booking alone is a thin business. Verification, billing, and payment are where the harder problems and the steadier revenue live. For Zocdoc, the purchase signals that it intends to compete on those fronts rather than remain a scheduling layer sitting on top of a fragmented system.

Patients, in theory, benefit most. Fewer surprise bills and fewer wasted trips to providers who do not take their plan would mark a meaningful improvement over the status quo.
