A dangerous heat wave is expected to settle over Southern California this week, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits across the region's interior. Forecasters warn that the most intense heat will arrive Thursday and Friday, creating hazardous conditions from inland San Luis Obispo County all the way south into San Diego County.
The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for many inland valleys and desert areas. In places like the San Fernando Valley, the Inland Empire, and the Antelope Valley, highs could reach between 105 and 112 degrees. Even coastal areas, typically cooler, will feel the heat, with temperatures in the 80s and low 90s.
Officials are urging residents to take precautions. The extreme heat poses a serious risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for children, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning. People are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and never leave people or pets in parked cars.
The heat is being driven by a strong ridge of high pressure building over the region. While the worst of it is expected to peak late in the week, the warm conditions are likely to persist through the weekend before a cooling trend arrives early next week. Local cooling centers are being opened in several counties to provide relief for those in need.
