Atrium Health has agreed to pay $1.8 million to settle a class-action lawsuit tied to its online patient portals. The case involves anyone who held a MyAtriumHealth or MyCarolinas account between January 1, 2015, and April 10, 2024.
The lawsuit claimed the health system allowed third-party tracking tools, like the Facebook pixel, to collect private patient data without proper consent. This data allegedly included details about appointments, prescriptions, and medical conditions. Atrium Health did not admit wrongdoing but chose to settle to avoid further legal costs.
Eligible patients may receive a cash payout from the settlement fund. The amount each person gets will depend on how many people file claims. The deadline to submit a claim has not yet passed, but patients are advised to check the official settlement website for details.
The settlement covers a wide range of users over nearly a decade. Anyone who used the portals for scheduling, messaging, or viewing test results during that time could be included. The case highlights growing concerns about how hospitals share patient data with tech companies for advertising or analytics.
Atrium Health, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, operates dozens of hospitals across the Southeast. The company has since updated its privacy practices, though the settlement does not require further changes beyond the payment.
