Health Department detects another cyclosporiasis case in Hawaii

The Hawaii Department of Health confirmed today that a U.S. military member stationed in the state has tested positive for cyclosporiasis, marking the latest case in an ongoing cluster. This brings the total number of confirmed infections among service personnel to at least three since late last month, though state officials say they are still investigating whether the cases are linked.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. People typically get it by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue, and they can appear anywhere from two to fourteen days after exposure. The illness can last for weeks if left untreated, but it is generally treatable with specific antibiotics.

The Department of Health said it is working with military health authorities to trace the possible source of the infection. So far, no common food item or dining facility has been identified. Officials noted that cyclosporiasis is not spread from person to person through casual contact, so the risk to the general public remains low.

This is not the first time Hawaii has seen cyclosporiasis cases. The state typically reports a handful of infections each year, often linked to imported fresh produce like raspberries, basil, or cilantro. In 2019, a larger outbreak was traced back to contaminated bagged salad mix sold at local grocery stores.

Health officials are reminding residents and visitors to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly, especially those eaten raw, and to practice good hand hygiene. Anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, especially after eating imported produce, should see a doctor and mention the possibility of cyclosporiasis. The department says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
