A new global study conducted by Johnson & Johnson alongside the American Optometric Association has identified a significant blind spot in women's health care. The research reveals that while menopause is widely associated with symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes, vision health is rarely part of the conversation, even though it can be directly affected by hormonal shifts.
The findings point to a troubling gap in longevity care. As women live longer lives, the quality of those years matters just as much as the length. Yet eye health during and after menopause often goes unaddressed by both patients and providers. Hormonal changes during this stage can contribute to dry eye, blurred vision, and other conditions that affect daily life, but many women do not connect these issues to menopause.
Researchers say the results highlight a need for better education and more routine eye screenings for women in midlife and beyond. Addressing vision as part of menopause care could improve overall well-being and help women maintain independence as they age. The groups behind the study are calling on health care professionals to include eye health in menopause discussions and on women to speak up about changes in their sight.
