Amber Freeman, host of the show Bloom, recently sat down with Lauren Mones, founder and CEO of Fermenting Fairy, to break down why fermented foods are more than just a trendy kitchen experiment. While the process of fermentation might sound intimidating to home cooks, Mones explained that these foods offer significant health advantages that are worth the effort.
Fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, and kombucha are packed with probiotics. These live bacteria help balance the gut microbiome, which plays a key role in digestion, immune function, and even mood regulation. Mones noted that a healthy gut can reduce inflammation and improve nutrient absorption, making fermented foods a powerful addition to any diet.
Beyond gut health, fermentation can also make certain nutrients easier for the body to use. For example, the process breaks down antinutrients found in grains and legumes, allowing for better absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. Mones emphasized that even small amounts of fermented foods eaten regularly can make a difference.
Freeman and Mones also addressed common concerns about taste and preparation. Mones suggested starting with mild options like plain yogurt or a simple vegetable ferment before moving on to stronger flavors. The key, she said, is consistency rather than quantity. Whether bought from a store or made at home, these foods offer a simple way to support overall wellness without drastic changes to your diet.
