NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx today announced it has begun offering two types of minimally invasive surgical procedures that were previously unavailable to many residents in the borough. The new offerings, thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), represent a significant advancement in local vascular care.
These cutting-edge procedures allow surgeons to repair life-threatening aortic conditions, such as aneurysms and dissections, through tiny incisions in the groin. Using real-time X-ray guidance, physicians navigate catheters and stents to the affected area of the aorta, reinforcing the vessel from within. This approach stands in stark contrast to traditional open surgery, which requires a large abdominal or chest incision.
The benefits for patients are substantial. Minimally invasive techniques typically lead to reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and lower risk of infection. By bringing these services directly to the Bronx, the hospital system eliminates the need for many patients to travel outside their community for complex, high-level care. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to expanding specialty services and addressing healthcare disparities, ensuring that advanced, life-saving treatments are accessible to all residents.
