Public Health Madison & Dane County has launched an urgent investigation following a confirmed measles exposure within the community. Health officials are working to identify and notify anyone who may have been in contact with the infected individual at specific locations.
The potential exposure sites and times are critical for public awareness. Individuals may have been exposed at the SSM Health Dean Medical Group clinic on May 21 between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Another potential exposure occurred at the UW Health West Clinic on May 23 between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through the air via coughing and sneezing. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a characteristic red rash that spreads across the body. The virus can remain infectious in the airspace for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area.
Health authorities are strongly urging anyone who was at these locations during the specified times to immediately check their vaccination status. Individuals who are unvaccinated or unsure of their immunity should contact a healthcare provider promptly. Vaccination remains the most effective method of prevention. Those who develop symptoms should call ahead before visiting any medical facility to prevent further potential spread.
