The city of Long Beach has recorded the first human case of West Nile virus in California this summer, local health officials announced. The patient, an adult whose identity has not been released, is currently recovering at home after experiencing symptoms consistent with the mosquito-borne illness.
Health authorities stated that the individual likely contracted the virus through a mosquito bite, as the insects become more active during warmer months. West Nile virus is typically transmitted to humans when an infected mosquito feeds on them. While most people infected show no symptoms, some may develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, or a skin rash. In rare cases, the virus can lead to severe neurological illness, particularly in older adults or those with weakened immune systems.
The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has increased surveillance and mosquito control efforts in the area. Officials are urging residents to take preventive measures, such as using EPA-approved insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and eliminating standing water around homes where mosquitoes breed.
This case serves as a reminder that West Nile virus remains a seasonal threat. Last year, California reported dozens of human infections across multiple counties, though most were mild. Health experts advise the public to stay vigilant and report any dead birds or unusual mosquito activity to local vector control agencies.
