A London NHS trust has begun a new animal therapy program, bringing dogs onto hospital sites to assist people with a range of mental health conditions. The initiative, which uses specially trained therapy animals, aims to reduce anxiety, improve mood, and provide comfort for patients who may struggle with traditional talking therapies.
Katia Stanford, a therapy dog handler, regularly brings her dog Ruby to various hospital locations. Ruby, a calm and gentle Labrador, works with patients dealing with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and severe anxiety. The sessions are informal, often involving simple interactions like petting, walking, or just sitting quietly with the dog.
Staff at the trust say the results have been noticeable. Patients who are usually withdrawn or resistant to treatment often open up when an animal is present. The presence of a dog can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and create a sense of safety. For some, it is the first time they have felt relaxed enough to talk about their feelings.
The program is part of a broader push to offer more holistic mental health care. While not a replacement for medication or therapy, animal-assisted interventions are gaining recognition for their ability to reach people who might otherwise fall through the cracks. The trust plans to expand the service if the initial pilot proves successful, with more handlers and dogs expected to join in the coming months.
