A community mental health organization based in Lewiston has finalized a merger with Sweetser, one of Maine's largest behavioral health networks. The move, announced this week, brings together two providers that serve thousands of residents across the state.
The Lewiston organization, which has operated for decades, will now operate under the Sweetser umbrella. Officials say the merger will expand access to services, particularly in rural areas where mental health resources are scarce. Clients can expect the same local staff and locations, but with added support from Sweetser's broader infrastructure, including crisis services, outpatient therapy, and residential programs.
Sweetser's CEO noted that the partnership was driven by a shared mission to provide comprehensive care. "This is about strengthening the safety net," she said. "By combining resources, we can reduce wait times and offer more specialized treatments."
The merger comes as Maine faces a growing demand for mental health care, with many providers struggling to keep up. Both organizations emphasized that no immediate changes to services or staffing are planned. Instead, they hope the integration will allow for long-term growth and stability.
For now, the Lewiston office will retain its current name but will be branded as a Sweetser affiliate. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
