The Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University has teamed up with the Cobb County Public Library system to offer free prostate cancer screenings. The goal is to break down barriers that often prevent men from getting checked, especially those who are uninsured or cannot afford the cost of a screening.
According to Emory, Black men face a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. The disease is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in Georgia. By bringing a mobile clinic directly to the community, organizers hope to reach men who might otherwise skip this important test.
The first clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will take place at the Switzer Library, located at 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta. The service is free and open to the public, with no insurance required. Officials say early detection is key to survival, and this effort aims to save lives by removing financial and access hurdles.
