Canadian pharmaceutical firm Apotex has secured regulatory approval from Health Canada for its generic version of semaglutide injection. The product is designed to match all commercial formats of Novo Nordisk's Ozempic, a widely used medication for managing type 2 diabetes.
The approval marks a significant step in expanding access to semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that helps control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Apotex's generic formulation will be available in the same dosing strengths and delivery devices as the brand-name drug, offering patients and healthcare providers a more affordable alternative.
Semaglutide has become a cornerstone therapy for diabetes management due to its efficacy in lowering hemoglobin A1c and supporting weight loss. However, the high cost of the branded version has been a barrier for many patients. Apotex's entry into the market is expected to increase competition and potentially reduce prices, though the company has not yet announced a launch date or pricing details.
The approval also comes amid growing demand for GLP-1 drugs, which have seen shortages in some regions due to off-label use for weight loss. By providing a generic option, Apotex aims to ensure a stable supply for diabetes patients who rely on the medication for their daily health needs. The company stated that the product will be manufactured at its facilities in Canada, adhering to strict quality standards set by Health Canada.
