Americans Fear Health Care Costs, Congresswoman Warns

Americans are not just thinking about the high prices of health care - they're afraid of them. That was the blunt assessment from Representative Debbie Dingell during a live Axios event, where she described the growing anxiety she hears from constituents across Michigan.

"Health care costs are scaring people," Dingell said. She noted that the fear goes beyond sticker shock at the pharmacy counter. Families are delaying necessary treatments, skipping medications, and avoiding doctor visits because they cannot predict what a bill will look like. Even those with insurance through their jobs are feeling the squeeze, as deductibles and copays continue to climb faster than wages.

Dingell pointed out that this anxiety cuts across party lines. In her district, which includes both urban and rural areas, voters from all backgrounds express the same worry: one unexpected medical event could wipe out their savings. She argued that the problem is not just about uninsured people, but about the millions who have coverage yet still struggle to afford care.

The congresswoman called for more transparency in pricing and stronger measures to lower drug costs. She emphasized that the conversation around health care needs to shift from abstract policy debates to the real-world fear people carry every day. Until that fear is addressed, she said, the system will continue to fail the very people it is meant to serve.
